Who We Are
AI LA’s Earth Summit is an annual event for convening a diverse range of voices to discuss the future of sustainability and ways in which AI can be used to make an impact.
The first Earth Summit was hosted in downtown Los Angeles on April 18th, 2019. Debrianna Berlin, former head of strategic communications for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, kicked off the event with an inspiring keynote address.
We invited cross-disciplinary teams to participate in context building exercises and curated breakout sessions with the XPRIZE Foundation to help solve challenges in sustainability and climate change.
We looked at a wide range of issues in our breakout sessions, including: climate change, biodiversity and conservation, healthy oceans, clean air, weather and disaster resilience, environmental injustice, and sustainable mobility.
We ended the Summit with networking and a moderated panel discussion with:
• Tia Kansara - CEO, Replenish Earth
• Bistra Dilkina - Associate Director, Center for AI in Society (CAIS), USC
• Andy Lipkis - Founder & President, Tree People
• Matthew Mulrennan - XPRIZE Director, Prize Operations, Ocean Initiative
• Kelly T. Sanders - Assistant Professor, USC’s Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Following our Earth Summit, we hosted a 54 hour Techstars Startup Weekend: AI for Sustainability at Soylent’s Innovation Lab.
The Techstars Startup Weekend is a programming, business, and sustainability challenge, with a goal of tackling local and global climate change and environmental issues. Developers will work with business experts and leaders to create products and business ideas, over the course of a weekend, to solve real world, conservation problems. This is a chance for students to showcase their passion for tech and innovation, in a high-energy, highly creative environment, with individuals who are equally as enthusiastic about the environment, AI/ML, and business.
The networking and growth opportunities are endless; students will have access to executives and managers from top companies, with judges, sponsors, and partnerships from companies like Amazon, Tucker Ellis, Google, and more!
Christine Harada, President of i(x) investments and former Federal Chief Sustainability Officer for the United States during the Obama administration provided an inspirational keynote address.
We had 42 ideas, which resulted in 8 teams being developed.
Anna Barber, Managing Director Techstars LA.
Travlin McCormack, CTO Communities Program Lead at AWS.
Jim Cooper, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer at Braid Theory.
